Graduate School
of Journalism

Semyung Graduate School of Journalism, established in 2008, offers a curriculum oriented toward on-the-job training first time ever in Korea to enable the prospective journalists to be competent in the field.

Our mission is to bring up journalists with three major abilities and virtues. First, comprehensive and executive abilities allowing the journalist to fulfill their role in any time and place in the age of multimedia, Second, in-depth knowledge in the humanities and social sciences as well as awareness of the ethical issues involved in journalism in the age of professionalism, and Third, proficiency in foreign languages to gather and report worldwide news fluently in the age of global interdependence.

We are proud of the School’s faculty members, who have not only acquired Ph.D.s from prominent universities at home or foreign countries but also gathered field experience as Korea’s representative reporters, columnists and producers in both major conservative and progressive media for ten to twenty years. This distinguishes our institution from any others which lacks lecturers with long-term field experience. A Tutoring system supplements lectures in that full-time lecturers help individual students on a one-to-one basis to set up a future course and to prepare what is needed to achieve it.

We also run a web-based media, <Danbinews>, in order to allow the students to gain first-hand experience in the journalism, including opportunities for investigative reporting and presenting their works to the public. It has been introduced as one of the three outstanding non-profit media in Korea by the journal of <Newspaper & Broadcasting>.

The Dae-won Education Foundation of Semyung University provides magnanimous scholarships including free accommodation to all our students and many opportunities for remission of tuition fees. The graduate students receive a top-level education without much economic burden.

Currently, over 200 graduates are working as reporters, journalists and producers (96% employment rate) establishing the School as the most prominent journalist academy in Korea. Based on our reputation, we have had 20 competent students graduated from renowned universities both home and abroad including, but not limited to, Seoul National University, University of London, Waseda University, Indiana State University, University of Toronto and a University in Indonesia.
